Are there different types of Pilates?

Yes, there are two primary types of Pilates - classical and contemporary. Each is very effective when done with proper form. Classical Pilates is considered to be the 34 original movements that Joseph Pilates invented. Pilates was originally called “Contrology” and provided very few modifications, even though Pilates’ goal was to bring his movements to the masses.

That’s where Contemporary Pilates comes in. The evolution of Pilates began in the 1960s (after Pilates’ death in 1967) and went well into the 1980s. Popularity in the practice soared during that time due to more emphasis on incorporating modifications and modern science which made Pilates more accessible to people.

How long will it take me to lose weight and see results?

“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference, and in 30 you'll have a whole new body.”

- Joseph Pilates

After your very first class you may notice subtle shifts—feeling taller, less anxious, and more connected to your body. With consistent practice, the results multiply, less stress, better sleep, improved posture, elevated mood, and a steady boost in confidence.

Pilates is not a quick fix. Unlike fast-track options such as crash diets or weight loss shots, Pilates sows the seeds of strength and alignment for a lifetime. Each class is an investment in your future self—one that builds sustainable energy, resilience, and well-being that lasts for a lifetime.

For best results: Pair your Pilates practice with quality sleep, hydration, and whole foods. These simple lifestyle choices help your body recover faster and unlock the full benefits of your commitment to health.

Why is Pilates so expensive?

Pilates is similar to a personal training session at a gym. Your investment at Maine Pilates means you are receiving personalized feedback and modifications to best fit your body and health goals. We keep our class sizes small to maximize instructor attention and support.

Your financial commitment covers our instructors to annually attend workshops and trainings to incorporate the latest advancements in the health and wellness industry along with evidence-based research into your classes. Instructors plan each class to challenge you mentally and physically while counteracting unhealthy daily habits created from our work and personal lifestyles. Lesson planning can be anywhere from 1 - 2 hours to prepare for a single class.

There are a variety of resources available on YouTube or through subscription-based services if you wanted to supplement what you learn in person into your personal practice. However often you choose to come to Maine Pilates, we hope that you will apply the benefits of personalized, in-person Pilates to your lifestyle and daily movement.

Do I need to be flexible and fit to start Pilates?

Not at all. Pilates is for everybody. Many clients start with limited mobility, injuries, or no fitness background. You can modify your class to meet you where you are while safely building strength, flexibility, and confidence.

The machine looks intimidating! Will I fall?

Learning new equipment can be a fun challenge, but there’s no reason to be intimidated! The reformer is a specialized piece of exercise equipment just like any of the machines you would see at a gym. However, the reformer has been used as a rehabilitative tool since its conception in the early 1900s. In modern years, it has gained popularity as a full body workout device great for sculpting and toning muscles in addition to offering a range of health benefits like correcting poor posture, strengthening bones, and improving flexibility.

While the reformer should not be feared, it should be respected. Whenever you’re on the reformer, you should know what your body and the machine are doing at all times. There are dangers to improper use, but they can be avoided by becoming familiar with the machine and knowing your body’s limitations.

Please note: We require all new clients to start their Pilates practice with us by taking several of our Reformer 🔥 classes in order to learn the equipment, Pilates terminology, and how to move with proper form safely while on the reformer.

Remember that all new endeavors have a learning curve, so give yourself time and understanding. Pilates is a mind-body workout which already requires intentional movement and connecting to your body, so when you factor in yet another element to keep track of, it can become mentally taxing. But once you find your groove, there are no limits to your growth because Pilates is ever-evolving. Come give it a try, you won’t regret it!

I’m pregnant. Is Pilates safe for me?

Yes! But please be sure to let your instructor know before class so they can offer you the appropriate modifications and ensure the safety of you and your baby.

What should I expect in class?

Our classes at Maine Pilates are designed to strengthen your core and spine, improve your balance, flexibility, and coordination, and build muscle while still remaining a structured, low-impact workout. We prioritize natural form and alignment throughout class. Instructors will verbally cue movement and further guide you through the workout with visual demonstrations and offer modifications when necessary. Hands-on assists are available upon request.

I’ve taken Reformer for years at several studios. Why does Maine Pilates requires approval for classes?

To ensure your safety and progress, instructor approval is required before joining Reformer or Jumpboard 🔥🔥 -🔥🔥🔥 classes. This approval is based on your ability to embody the Maine Pilates Method and perform exercises in Reformer🔥 classes with relative ease, good form, and without a lot of explanation or guidance.

Typically, we require 4 to 10 Reformer🔥 classes before progressing to Reformer 🔥🔥 in order to fully learn, comprehend, and apply the fundamental movements necessary for faster paced Reformer classes. 20-30 Reformer 🔥🔥 classes are recommended before receiving an invitation to join Reformer 🔥🔥🔥. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us at hello@mainepilates.com.
